The First Promise

As Christmas approaches we reflect on God's promises. Throughout history God's faithfulness in keeping his promises has never failed. The Bible is filled with many promises from our gracious and loving God. None was more important than the promise of a Savior from our sins. Christmas time focuses our attention on the fulfillment of this promise and reminds us of his faithfulness in fulfilling all of his promises.

From beginning to end the Bible is the story of God's love for us. The focus of the entire Bible is on Jesus. The Old Testament focuses on the promise of the coming Savior. The New Testament focuses on the Savior's life, work, death, resurrection and the promise of his return. It is amazing how quickly we see the first promise of the Savior in Genesis 3:15. after the fall Adam and Eve felt shame and they hid. God found them and questioned them. We can imagine the shame and guilt that must have been building. But God did not let it build long. He promises a Savior. An offspring that would crush the head of the tempter. Yes there would still be consequences to their actions. Perfection was lost. Pain and suffering entered the world. Worst of all, death entered the world. But in all of that comes the hope that God gives. The hope that the consequences would not last forever. The hope that came about on that first Christmas and reached its fulfillment that first Easter. The story of our salvation begins.

As we look back to that fulfillment, remember the promises that God gives us. He is always faithful in bringing them to completion.
